With the fall of America came the Chaos Times, an era where human society quickly unraveled, and fell into ignorance, starvation, disease, and war. This was primarily due to the lack of oil that enabled American society, and in no place was the chaos worse than California. A state of 37 million at its peak, once the oil ran out California quickly fell into the worst cases of chaos.

When the water dried up in Los Angels the state quickly fell into infighting over the precious fresh water controlled by the northern half of the state. Thirst and Hunger led to rioting, then starvation, and finally cannibalism. For nearly three centuries, only a handful of communities in California managed to survive, constantly fighting the endless hoards of cannibals, Jaredite Raiders, and Barbarians.

This finally came to an end in BLY 97 when Queen Abila of Fresno led the Great Purge that lasted for nearly thirty years, and wiped out most of the savages from the Valley, and drove the Jaredites back into the Great Basin. Queen Abila claimed the Valley to be under her protection, expanding Fresno's borders, making it the most powerful state in California.

In LY 66 the Kingdom of Fresno and the Hoods of Sacramento and Barbara signed the Treaty of Fernando, uniting the three states as a single confederation, the American Union. In 112 LY, with the establishment of the Angelino Papacy, the American Union took on the name Holy American Union, putting the legitimacy of the elected monarch, the Presimpero (Californian for Imperial President), in the hands of the American Evangelist Church.

Today, the Holy American Union, is one of the continents most powerful nations, and also one of the most Pious. It is presently involved with the Evangelical Quegunta, an effort to purge all of Christiandom of supposed heretics; as well as a long standing conflict with Cascadia, whom they see as a heathen nation.

Recently the Union completed the Seventh Campaign, a bloody religious war against the Mormon Deserets that controlled historic American sites such as the ancient city of Denver and the vaults of Cheyenne Mountain. This campaign ended with the successful, albeit brief, capture of western Colorado, and with it the first opening of Cheyenne Mountain in six centuries before it was closed by the Mountain United States. Inside the ancient military base were exabytes of data, all stored in Carbon based Holographic storage drives; the height of American technology before the fall. Roughly 60% of these drives were deemed unrecoverable by the scholars, however, those that did work, revealed invaluable quantities of lost knowledge from the ancient Americans.
