Diana of Themyscira: Wonder Woman

Description

WB Animation, YOUNG JUSTICE, Wonder Woman. I claim no ownership of the character or her various incarnation across the DC multiverse, this was developed from an existing template.

As much as I despise modern depictions of Superman I can count on one hand the number of depictions of Wonder Woman across all media that I thought were good. In most forms, she's either depicted as a feminazi, a stripper, a 1950s "Lesbian who only needs a man" stereotype or all three if your name is Frank Miller. The only people I've ever seen treat her consistently with respect as a timeless character is the WB, Alex Ross and William Moulton Marston back when the character was basically DC's version of Captain America. And while I like all those versions, I always wanted to see them play with the mythology a little more. Here we have an Amazon, born of clay on an island of women who were killed by men across history, given new life by the Olympians. In terms of her appearance, I think Gal Gadot is passable at best, but once again we run into the biggest problem facing strong female characters in film, the actresses are never willing to put on the muscle mass required to be remotely believable because of the very body image hangups perpetuated by old patriarchal ideas of beauty Wonder Woman is meant to fight against. I do like that they got someone who looks Mediterranean to play the character, and think making her armor look more Greek was a smart move. Bruce Timm, as much as I love his version of the character, suffers the same physical problem and a simplistic uniform, but that's mostly because Bruce Timm is incapable of drawing characters who don't look like 40s pinup models. So here's my take on the character, basically Gal Gadot with a fighter's body and some color injected into the uniform. Once again this is part of my spin on the DC universe and my rules apply as always.

1. Accept that certain characters do not work in the modern age, and are better set in older points in time.
2. Let characters die and let their replacements matter.
3. Allow for diversity in story telling and focus on character driven stories.

Wonder Woman's story should start during WWII, focusing on her entry into Man's World, her relationship with Steve Trevor, which, rather than the typical "we're both hot and the leads, so of course we're gonna pork," model of American cinema should be more Miyazaki-esq, and focus on how two people help eachother keep on living. The movie should be introduced immediately after the Superman origin movie I concocted earlier, and serve as a "Captain America, First Avenger" of the series, in that it will serve to introduce a major character, and expand a wider universe justifying the need for a Justice League. I'd also like the movie to focus on how Diana is the only immortal among the Justice League, and how everything around her is dying while she remains physically the same. Steve should be introduced as a young man in his early 20s, but more mature than Diana due to his experiences in the OSS, but we should keep seeing Steve in future films aging, and how that contrasts to Diana who continues to grow and mature, but ultimately cannot save her love from the passage of time. This should be reflected in her home. Themyscira should be decaying by the time Steve washes ashore, we should see Hippolyta should be physically as young as all the other Amazons, but move with a frailty brought on by an eternal life and the burden of ruling the last bastion of the Olympians (who are all gone by this point in time, which will feed into the concept of the DC Universe Mythology in that the Justice League are the Gods of the Modern World). Diana should be sent out into Man's World, not just to teach them something about Amazon philosophy, but to also be the first to see if Amazons and mortals can coexist.

It shouldn’t be more Miyazaki era dude. Themyscira shouldn’t be decaying. They shouldn’t just have someone mediterranean to play the part. She should be casted by a woman who looks the part. Bruce Tim isn’t incapable of drawing people who look like 40s pinup models, also his characters do have the muscle mass and they Should do for the Classic look and not have the greekish outfit. It isn’t simplistic. It’s iconic and classic
