We all have visions of the future, though many are just our projections of today, or a pitiful attempt at foresight. So if you indulge me, here's how I see the world in, lets say by mid-century.

It is the early 2050s, and humanity has entered into arguably the most pivotal moment in its history since the first ape stood upright. The earth is divided into two factions, the Reactionaries, and the Enlightened; two sides currently living in a very uneasy peace. The Reactionaries have fenced themselves into a few select communities, mostly in sights of religious and cultural importance, the largest being Vatican City, Jerusalem, Mecca, Salt Lake City, etc. The Enlightened control most of the planet, but dwell primarily in the great Megalopolises of the world.

The Enlightened administer themselves in an almost anarchic system known as Cloud Democracy, with political divisions meaning very little beyond what remains of the regional historical identity of Earth's ancient civilizations. The Enlightened, are non-biological organisms, capable of continuously improving their own anatomy based on their surroundings and their personal preferences. Compared to humans of the early 21st Century, the Enlightened posses the equivalent intelligence of the combined human population of the day, however this is expanded by their ability to continuously stream information as it is created between every other member of the species, and their external cortex (the equivalent of a Personal Computer).

The concept of "employment," has completely evaporated for the Enlightened, as most tasks have can be managed by subroutines within any single entity. The separation between machine and life-form is based entirely on thought. Reproduction is now an activity that anyone of any gender can do on their own or with one or many partners, as the creation of a life-form merely requires a blueprint and a nano-factory, and the separation between the metaphysical and the virtual is one of the thinnest lines in known to mankind.

By this point the Enlightened, still identifying to themselves as human beings, despite any biological connection to the nearly extinct species, have begun to spread throughout the stars, discovering new worlds, and making contact with new species. To date, none have been discovered, outside of humanity, that have achieved the singularity. Most intelligent life forms are destroyed by cosmic events, or somewhat more uncommon, their own actions. Many worlds are discovered to have had intelligent civilization evolve multiple times, and multiple times be destroyed before becoming an advanced species. Human beings interact with these creatures out of both curiosity, and a desire to prevent the destruction of intelligence throughout the universe.

Time is now a window; space, a doorway; evolution, race, want, ignorance and death are all relics of a darker time, embraced only by the reactionaries.
I don't know if the future will look like this, only recently have any of our predictions of, "what will happen next," held any water, and only a few people have made them correctly. Human beings are an odd species, and society tends to be wary of radical change; but one thing I am certain of: we no longer have the luxury of ignoring change.

You believe in the singularity as well?

I think the data supports the notion of a technological singularity, but Moore's law is going to run out around the early 2020s. The Singularity really hinges on if we can pull off DNA based or quantum computing by then.

The 2020's is also supposedly when we create the first smart AIs, so that may aid in the DNA quantum computing. They are, theoretically, going to have an unlimited capability to learn.

Is this what's called technological singularity?

Essentially yes.

Shame that my vision of the world is far bleaker, but hey such is the woes of playing Homefront over and over again!

In other words, they're in the process of turning into energy beings. :D

Still, the future, as it's said, is an open book. To predict it is pretty much a crapshoot.
