Space Station Freedom by YNot1989 Space Station Freedom by YNot1989
The largest space station in history, Space Station Freedom is made up of 72 Space Shuttle Wet Workshop Modules lofted into orbit with the Space Shuttle over the course of some 9 years worth of space flights. Construction was capped at 72 because any additional modules would threaten to literally shake the station apart. The station's three rings spin slowly on the central axis to provide artificial gravity to its 5,214,427 cubic feet of living space, though the core section remains in a state of weightlessness thanks to a counter rotating assembly. The central ring houses all the living facilities for the 110 researchers, scientists, and engineers from over 70 countries who remain on station for a year or more; it includes a gym, communal dining quarters and a small movie theater. The upper ring is home to the station's formerly emergency, not primary food, air, and water supply; a series of greenhouses and artificial biomes provides water recycling, food, and oxygen for the crew with just the input of CO2 and waste from the crew and artificial sunlight generated by sodium lamps. The lower ring is home to the main engineering and science stations that can operate without the need of zero gravity. These modules are used primarily to house tools and equipment to repair and maintain the station, and follow up on experiment packages from outside the station or in the weightless section, a series of refueling tanks are positioned around the ring providing the station with RCS propellant and visiting spacecraft with fuel for extended flights to the Moon, Near Earth Asteroids, or Mars. The core of the station does not spin and remains weightless relative to the rest of the station, and as such is the section where the bulk of all science experiments are actually conducted, and where spacecraft can dock and be serviced by the station's crew.

Space station freedom is considered by many to be America's greatest contribution to mankind, perhaps even greater than the Mars missions. Aboard space station freedom, scientists have discovered new manufacturing techniques for carbon based circuit boards, new biochemicals to treat diabetes, cancer, and provide nutrients to plants boosting crop yields, and it has become the gateway to the solar system.

Reminds me greatly of Tank Farm Dynamo.

Well. . . certainly not the "Space Station Freedom" I grew up reading about.
