One of the few worlds humanity is able to inhabit without terraforming, Avalon was rapidly colonized shortly after Planet Atlantis. The second planet in the Tau Ceti System, Avalon is a lush and fertile world, unique for a surprising absence of deserts outside of the Northern Tundra.
Initially discovered by Anglo-Europeans, Avalon was named after the land of the same name in Arthurian legend, and as such many of its cities are named after many characters and places of the ancient lore; the largest two cities being the US City of Oberon, and the European city of Titania.
The planet's name was apparently chosen by the chief biologist of the initial expedition, Doctor Margaret Haven, after coming into contact with forest populated almost exclusively by a native species of flora that produced a fruit greatly resembled an Earth Apple. The encounter was so unique to the history of alien plants (it is very rare to find any off-Earth biology that is in the slightest bit compatible with unaltered-humans) that Haven reportedly exclaimed, "Friends I do believe we've stumbled on to Avalon."
