Suppose that when humans begin to colonize other worlds the US is still alive in one form or another. Won't that mean that there will be many additional states being brought into the union, and thereby many additional stars to the US flag?

A solution may be to start counting plantets or star systesms with US territories for each star. This one proposes 27 systems with the star in the center representing Sol or Earth.

Plus it looks cool ;P

The Outer Colonies

The Inner Colonies

Colonial Mars

One problem with showing a star for each solar system is that a solar system with only one state is represented equally to a solar system with 50 or more states.

No different than representing states with only one congressional district equally with a state with 50.

I suppose. It was only meant as a small criticism. I do think its a very nice flag.

Could also represent additional states on Earth as well. I mean eventually, if we do add more, the flag won't be able to hold more than 50 stars in its blue square. It'll get really crowded and look ridiculous. So why not have the big star represent say 25 or 50 states and the smaller ones are the newer states.

Actually there are already conceptual designs for flags with more stars. Not for any reason, just because people wanted to see what it looked like I guess. Personally I like the idea for the 51 star flag with the stars arranged in a circle. There's a widget somewhere on the net that actually generates American flags with up to 100 stars based on an algorithm on how to best place them... I had the website but it appears to be gone from there. I have not since found it, sadly.

btw, isn't having colonies somehow prohibited by the US Constitution?

What the hell do you think Alaska and Hawaii were? Not to mention Cuba, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands. Legally they're not colonies, but if my country is still good at one thing its finding loopholes in out own legal system.

I could see this being a flag used by outer-space States, with the star in the center representing Earth while the other stars might represent various Martian states, space stations, &c. There would probably be a different flag used by the Earth states to represent their number, with a group of smaller stars in the center to represent the different major groupings of States, like Moon, Mars, near-Earth, Asteroid Belt, and moons of Jupiter.

Hm.. Actually that's a very interesting notion, if I may take it a step further: This flag represents the US in terms of planetary systems, so what if each planet with X amount of states, had a flag corresponding to that on top of their own state flags. I.E. a Federal, Planetary, State, and then Local system of Government. Thanks for the Epiphany!
