Emberverse: A New Generation by YNot1989 Emberverse: A New Generation by YNot1989
It has been 22 years since the Change, the day where electricity, steam, and internal combustion became impossible.

Like Rome before it, the once great Empire that was the United States of America has collapsed into several unique new nations, all fighting to survive in this harsh new world.

For those of you who haven't I encourage you to pick up SM Stirling's Dies the Fire or Emberverse Series of books. They are one of the most interesting Sci-Fi meets Fantasy tales I've ever had the pleasure of reading and if you love good althistory, adventure stories, or post-apocalyptic visions you'll love these books.

This map is a slightly more accurate version of my popular map [link] . The borders are largely just extrapolation as there is very little concrete data about the borders of Post-Change America, so I guessed as best I could to fill in the blanks.

SM Stirling is a big fan of utilizing the elements of cannibals, a species of people bred to be willing servants, and women being table to mentally turn on and off their ability to become pregnant.  You'll find at least one of these in pretty much every universe he creates, and sometimes like in the Drakaverse and Lords of Creation you get two.

Iwish Lords of Creation would have been more popular though I am not sure it had anywhere worthwhile to after the way Crimson Kings ended.

Well, at least people won't be acting like the world revolves around the east coast anymore.

Because it's the most likely scenario given the premise of the series: A critical change in the laws of physics and thermo-dynamics. ;)

i didn`t really get the whole FUBAR with the physics, the premise would had been solid enough if everything was the fault of some insanely massive EMP, not like groups of gun and explosives carriying survivalists would be of help but still...

If i'm not mistaken, Stirling wrote off the Quebecois as Cannibals except for the rural part which was near Norrheim which had mostly united into the Beckwa confederation. I think.

I've been curious for awhile about the Emberverse books, a friend of mine keeps trying to get me to read them. My question though pertains to the Death Zones. What's wrong with them exactly?

They are the, "hyperdeveloped," parts of the country and the immediately outlying areas. Basically when the Change ocured, petrofarming died along with everything else so we could not produce, refrigerate, or transport food to keep 6 billion people (at the time of the books) alive. So people started to starve, and fled to the country to find food, and when they'd eaten everything they could find they started eating each other. On top of that the millions of dead and decaying cities became breeding grounds for diseases we hadn't seen in centuries.

Excellent map. The author was a bit off his head with throwing everyone into neopaganism and monarchism, but the map is solid.

Ah, I think I remember reading about this series a while back. I'll have to get my hands on the first couple of volumes sometime soon, as it seemed quite interesting.

Nice map as well, though I can't say anything more than that, not actually having read the books or anything.

I've been thinking of reading them, but I haven't gotten to it yet. Still, it seems like a mightily interesting scenario.

I wonder if they still have bicycles...

Also, it's a great map!

Yes, bicycles were actually a key point of the first books, mostly because a lot of people used them and crossbows to become "instant mongols."

Great map, shame we can't see Prince Edward Island.

I can't wait to get the new book, but I'm going to re-read the last one before I order it.

What is meant by "impossible"? That using electricity, steam, and internal combustion are too unwieldy or expensive? Or they're now physically impossible to implement?

The laws of physics have been manipulated by some outside force (alien space bats, the christian god, or the pagan Lord and Lady, who knows) to where they don't work on Earth beyond the biological.

In the books there is "The Change." Nobody knows what exactly happens, but basically the laws of physics change, making these things impossible. Fire and electricity are still around, but much weaker to the point of being pretty much useless.
