...And Carrying a Cross by YNot1989 ...And Carrying a Cross by YNot1989
2019: President Palin deploys troops to Northern Mexico to eliminate the threat of the Cartels. The rebellions in Seattle have now spread throughout Oregon and Washington.

2020: The 29th Amendment is ratified, eliminating term limits for the Presidency. The National Guard begins to be used to arrest political dissidents.

2021: The American prison population has exploded as political dissidents are arrested in droves. The US Government authorizes the construction of a number of new super max prisons in Alaska and the South West.

2022: NATO officially ejects the United States from the alliance. Europe is disgusted by what has become of the United States.

2023: The Canadian Parliament votes to sever all ties with the United States. Russia signs a mutual defense treaty with the US.

2024: President Palin becomes the second President in history to be elected to a fourth Term. With the electoral college under complete Tea Party control, elections have become little more than ceremonial.

2025: The Mexican government falls, and an American Puppet regime is installed. Similar regimes are being installed in almost every country where an American military base remains.

2026: Iraq is official annexed as an American territory. Russia Invades Central Asia. War is immanent.

Nah, not Palin.  To be fair, Bush and Clinton (again) are supposedly running for President.  Not sure which is worse, honestly.

Wouldn't it be more appropriate with a charismatic dictator? I'm sure there are plenty of people who can serve as an American Hitler/Stalin analogue.

Yes, but Hitler and Stalin had to stand for something, and appealed to symbols to boost their support and add weight to arguments that should have been laughed out of the room.

Lamar Smith would be the best bet. The way he continues to push his stupid internet censorship bills without caring what people think about them makes him a perfect potential fascist. I loathe his very existence.

I probably should have said "potential fascist dictator". I don't know how such a blatantly corrupt politician could get elected in the first place. That bastard doesn't deserve to be elected town dogcatcher, let alone Senator.

I'm pretty sure that most of the Northeast coast/New England would be in revolt as well, mostly because it is very strongly liberal. And I doubt Maine would ever have voted for Palin, the Republicans from that area aren't Tea Partiers.

Well outright rebellion seemed to be more likely for Norther California, while Jefferson and SoCal are too conservative (under the conditions of this TL) to abandon Tea Party style fascism.

Palin's the second president ever to be elected for the fourth term? Then who's the first?

Best of all though, you finished this! Really cool scenario and somehow, I don't know if I'd be surprised of not if something like this'd actually come to pass. I've always asked myself how long it'd take for the Christian fanatics in the US to take up arms like their Muslim dittos in the Middle East. I mean, the Westboro Baptist Church is pretty much like a Christian al-Qaida.

Franklin D. Roosevelt served for 3 whole terms, was elected to a fourth, but died shortly after being sworn into office.

And be careful about who you call a terrorist, we made that mistake for 8 years over here and way to many of our fellow citizens are still doing it. The Westboros are vile, repugnant, evil scum... but in America the free exercise of religion, peaceful demonstration, and hate speech, are all protected rights under the constitution. To quote, "The American President:"

"America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours."

I am actually opposed to outlawing hate speech. Personally I believe that in America one has to either grow thicker skin or get the fuck out; and I'm a pinko commie hippy liberal non-believer douche.

haha no. In America you're allowed to knock the fuck out people who annoy you beyond a certain limit. Such a doctrine as fighting words exists to provide mitigating circumstances for fights which break out :D

Also, white southerners and their 'honor culture'

Unfortunately, such things are outlawed here (supposedly - it's a bit hit and miss).
Worryingly, the most extreme seem to get away with it.

I don't call them terrorists, not just yet. Not until they, as Nelson Mandela once put it "target and kill innocent civilians to achieve their goals" do I resort to calling them terrorists, 'cause that's my definition of a terrorist. Though the Westboros carry so much hate within them that it seems almost inevitable that it'd lead to violence at one point or another.

I'm working on an electoral map that will be a little clearer, but there are 8 new states: Southern Illinois, Eastern Washington, Eastern Oregon, West Texas, East Texas, and South Texas, Southern California, and the North Coast.

I'm still working on their actual names.
