2080: US Territorial Acquisitions in the Americas

The 21st Century saw a rebirth of nationalism worldwide, and while for Eurasia this meant balkanization and internal strife, for the US it meant a level of territorial expansion unseen since the 19th Century. The US, like other countries in the mid 21st Century was starved for skilled labor, and one advantage of the Flood was that there were plenty of climate refugees looking to relocate and work in the United States. The US also sought to expand its reach into South America to take advantage of equatorial launch sites during the Little Cold War, and in fact accelerated that effort after the breakup of the Russian federation as private launch contractors saw a surge of contracts from companies taking advantage of the Cislunar Rush and Mars colonization. This so called, "Return to Manifest Destiny" while decidedly a product of nationalism, was a far cry from the religiously motivated and often overtly racist movement of the 19th Century. In the 21st Century, the US saw its expansion as an act of extending the American Way to more people, which given the state of Eurasia during this period, wasn't a hard sell.
