The world faces arguably its greatest crisis. The Flood, a great rising of the seas brought on by a perfect storm of human created greenhouse gasses, naturally occurring cycles in the Earth's climate, and a freak accident that unleashed billions of tons of natural gas into the atmosphere from beneath the now gone Siberian permafrost.
As sea levels continue to rise unabated, billions are driven from their homes and left without food or clean water. Extreme weather patterns result in record low crop yields around the planet, and the desalination of the ocean kills the vast majority of the world's salt water fish, leaving the oceans barren, and the planet starving. Wars over lack of access to usable resources, land, and food, or simple desperation break out over the next few years.
The United Nations forms the International Flood Relief Organization, and sends peace keepers to try and manage the global refugee crisis where it is at its worst. The United States, Europe and India all begin investing heavily in alternative farming techniques to make up for the deficit of food.
Mariner Space Development captures an asteroid in Earth-Luna Orbit. Regular flights yield billions in resources. Mariner begins investing heavily into several humanitarian projects.
The Russian civli war comes to an end, Russia formally dissolves into the Republic of Moscova and the Siberian Socialist Republic.
The Chinese civil war comes to an end, along with the Cartel War, but conflict between the US and Gran Columbia continues in Central America.
Mariner establishes Generation Enterprises as the primary holder of their revenue from off-earth mining operations. The organization funds trillions in R&D and humanitarian projects. Africa receives trillions from Generation for infrastructure development. Private Military Contractors are sent in to protect the various projects. With gene sequencing so inexpensive that most sinks have them installed, the Jaques Cousteau Foundation begins sending out Sequencing Probes throughout the world's oceans to identify the genetic code of every sea creature, dead or alive. This raises hope for rebuilding the desalinated oceans.
